Restore the Bear:  Gulf Coast Environmental Fund of the BBCC

The threatened Louisiana black bear is the largest mammal on the Louisiana Gulf Coast, is an important flagship species, and a catalyst for environmental and economic recovery and restoration.

Money donated to the BBCC will support the people and environment of the Louisiana Gulf Coast and Mississippi River Delta. Species recovery work on behalf of the Louisiana black bear has far-reaching benefits for all animals in the ecosystem. Moreover, water quality and flood retention improvements, and carbon sequestration benefit humans throughout the region. Funds donate will go support the following efforts:

1. Engaging and restoring hope to the people of the beleaguered Louisiana gulf coast region through locally-relevant environmental education programs. The BBCC's school and community programs provide a vehicle for modeling cooperative work among diverse interests for successful results. The nascent recovery of the bear dictates an increase in education and outreach to a growing constituency in bear habitat. The ongoing recovery of the Louisiana black bear provides an inspirational example of the resilience of the environment of this region - an area in dire need of positive messages.

2. Creating student internships for young professionals to gain valuable hands-on experience in a grassroots environmental restoration organization.

3. Public education about the proven methods for environmental recovery: the BBCC's nationally recognized model for species restoration.

4. Advocacy for environmental recovery across the region. The federally threatened Louisiana black bear is the largest mammal in the region, is an important flagship species, and provides a catalyst for landscape scale environmental recovery and restoration. We work with schools, communities and festivals, including the annual Bayou Teche Bear and Birding Festival.

Target budget:  $50,000 by December 31, 2010.

Research in East Texas

A three-year southeast Texas study will begin soon to determine occupancy and distribution of black bears in East Texas, examine demographics, and assess the suitability of forested habitats to identify priority locations. The 2.5 million acre study area includes the southern portion of the Pineywoods, the Middle Neches and Lower Neches River Corridors, and the Big Thicket National Preserve.

Total project: $340,000.

Funding needed for 2009: $22,000

Funding needed for three-year study: $104 ,000

Research support for South Louisiana

A three-year study of bears in Coastal Louisiana is scheduled to begin in 2009.  The study will estimate bear population size, density, survival rates, and population growth rates in St. Mary and Iberia Parishes between the coast and U.S.Highway 90.  Total project:  $409,000.

Funding needed for 2009: $184,000

Funding needed for three-year study: $409,000

The BBCC seeks funding, and champions for this project to help secure full funding.

VEHICLES NEEDED for Research Support

The BBCC seeks donation of a total of five vehicles to support research work in Louisiana.  Four-wheel drive preferred, but two-wheel drive will also work.  Vehicles will be used on three research studies on bear population estimates and DNA analysis of hair snare specimens.  The studies are based in Pointe Coupee (1 truck needed), the Madison/Tensas area (2 trucks needed), and in coastal Louisiana (2 trucks needed) - each covering approximately 100 square miles.    Donations are tax deductible.   Please click here to contact the BBCC, or call us at (225) 763-5425.
