When bears gain access to the high calorie content of human foods (generally in the form of garbage), they may become nuisance bears. It is very difficult to change bad habits once formed. Relocating nuisance bears to a different area only relocates the problem, and bears usually get into trouble again. We urge people living in areas occupied by bears to make small changes in their lifestyle to manage their garbage in ways that prevent bears from getting into their refuse. Please clean garbage cans regularly, store cans out of reach of bears, and place garbage cans on the street on the morning of the pickup, not the night before.
If no bad habit is established, none has to be broken.***
